Key development areas of the tire industry

Recently, the American Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA) released its first US Industry Sustainability Report, which introduced its members' shared vision for the sustainable development of the US tire manufacturing industry.

The report identifies areas in which the industry is striving to advance, including:

 Improve safety by developing innovations in tire technology such as run-flat, self-sealing, solid and self-inflating tires;

 Development of sensors, chips and labels that can be embedded in the tread groove to obtain real-time information on tire temperature, pressure and tread wear;

 Reduce production-related emissions, improve energy efficiency, and develop and use technologies that reduce water use and solid waste;

 Research and develop the use of sustainable materials in tires to enhance biodiversity and reduce dependence on non-renewable materials;

Some USTMA members are studying the commercial potential of guayule and are committed to the production, testing and development of dandelion rubber tires, as well as soybean oil, rice husk and orange peel.

The report also describes the major achievements of the industry in recent years, including:

 In 2017, 81% of used tires were used effectively;

 Since 2010, USTMA members have reduced carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 10%;

 Nearly 90% of US member facilities are ISO 14001 certified;

 Since 2005, the failure rate of member facilities has been reduced by 50%;

 100% of USMAT member companies support charitable activities;

“Sustainability drives the business practices and operational principles of tire manufacturers,” said Anne Forristall Luke, President and CEO of USTMA. “From extending tire life and performance innovation to ensuring the safety of drivers and employees, all in the tires Protecting the environment during the life cycle, we are constantly looking for ways to improve our products and operations."

"China Rubber" learned that USTMA's 12 member companies operate 56 tire manufacturing plants in 17 states in the United States, with annual sales of more than 27 billion US dollars, annual tax revenue of 11.3 billion US dollars, directly supporting more than 250,000 jobs.

The USTMA Sustainability Report compiles the contents of 2016-2018 and will be updated every two years.

“Many of our members' sustainability initiatives are at the forefront and far beyond what is covered in this report,” Luke points out. “With regard to a forward-looking sustainability vision, we can be in terms of safety, performance and environmental management. Have a bigger impact."
